Our Freedom: Our Place

Our Freedom: Then and Now is a UK-wide, locally-led arts and creative programme reflecting on what 'Our Freedom' means to local people and their communities, following the 80th anniversary of VE/VJ Day. In Norfolk this is being led by Norfolk Libraries with American Library and is based out of The Place, the new home of Great Yarmouth Library.

Throughout autumn and winter 2025 we have been meeting local people and reflecting on what Great Yarmouth means to them in the context of freedom and peace since the end of WW2.

Join us for a series of activities at The Place on Great Yarmouth market on Friday 19 and Saturday 20 December. This series is presented in partnership with Reel Connections CIC and is happening alongside the Beyond the Bassline exhibition which explores Black music and liberation in England in the post war period. Special events are being delivered with Creative Arts East and the ReKindle project in libraries.

The programme is delivered in partnership with Libraries Connected and Open Eye Gallery, supported using public funding by UK Government through Arts Council England.

In 2026 more activities on the theme of freedom and peace and the meaning of home and place will be hosted by American Library at venues around Norfolk.
